A Culture of Respect

“We serve the bird” is a phrase that’s used regularly at Herbruck’s. Serving our flocks – nurturing them with the best care, handling, nutrition, and environmental conditions – is central to how we do business.

Not only is this the right thing to do, it’s good for our customers and the company. A healthy, content hen will lay more and better-quality eggs, which is our number one goal.

For decades, Herbruck’s has led the industry in setting the standards for animal care and nurture. As a rule, our policies and practices have both preceded and exceeded industry and federal guidelines.

Education and Accountability

The active, ongoing development of our staff is a key to Herbruck’s successful operations. The aim is for all of our people to embody the culture of respect that Herbruck’s is known for. Strategies that help us nurture and maintain a first-rate team include the following:

  • Expertise. The Herbruck’s management team includes several animal science and animal nutrition experts recruited from across the United States. They hold degrees from schools such as Cairo University (Egypt), Michigan State University, the University of Georgia, Hope College, and Calvin College.

  • Sophisticated training. All caretaking staff members participate in rigorous, regular training in animal handling, health, and welfare. Herbruck’s has developed specialized training in procedures such as vaccination and laser beak treatment. Procedures are carefully reviewed each time they are carried out, and the training program constantly evolves to reflect process improvements.

  • Consistent controls. Staff are held accountable through mandatory sign-offs on company bird care and bio-security procedures. Moreover, every company employee signs a bio-security and environmental commitment statement.

  • Certifications and audits. Herbruck’s undergoes rigorous third-party audits of its production and animal care processes and facilities. The company is certified annually by the American Humane Association Certified Program and Humane Farm Animal Care, among others.
